I believe this title strikes a chord with most. That is unless you're the rare breed that has been genetically blessed from day one. And in those particular persons case this need not apply! However, the majority of us that tend to gain weight somewhat easily when we have a few to many cheats have experienced this pang of paranoia. In fact in a recent conversation I had just a couple of days ago, this exact feeling was expressed to me. A young man who had lost over 40 pounds and counting, was anxious to get started in the gym to start building some muscle on his 6 foot tall plus frame. In the meantime before he is "ready" to go to the gym he was working out at his home practicing a popular home dvd series that has had really great success. So I explained to him that his dvd was a great workout, that it would definately help him lose fat,get conditioned and cut up. However, if he really wanted to add muscle to his bod, he would have to hit the weights. He was very reluctant to hear this news. He really wanted to go to this highly reveered facility of bodybuilding and physique perfection, but did not feel he was good enough to be in the presence of those that frequent these temples of the bodz. He was concerned that he wouldn't look as good as other guys there or even worse, what if he was to see a potential love interest and not have his body up to par?? I tried to explain to him that the results he had achieved thus far were awesome to say the least and that he should "Rock it" and get his rear in the gym already.
My heart was saddened at his lack of self confidence. I personally understood this feeling he was battling. I had these very same thoughts as I began my journey into the unknown when I was a mere gym-pup. At that time,I was post-baby number three and insecure about the condition my body was in. I had that fear of being judged as fat or ugly or even worse, what if I was doing it wrong.
So with this past comaraderie he and I shared, I encouraged him to let it go and to face this fear head on. I swiftly instructed him that when he go to the gym,to cover himself up and to wear his hat down low with Ipod in place to secure that he was in undercover mode. The goal would be to get in and get out with his focus on his workout...not on the ladies! Then the next day to do it again, then again and again. I personally feel that this dedication and consistency would be noticed and admired by his other gym peers. Also that before he knows it, he will be building up his long desired muscle and shaving off any residual fat. Which in the end, will give him an undeniably attractive sense of self confidence, that only blind would not to be able to notice. I guarantee that in a short amount of time this twenty something wannabe would soon be a 'peacock' of sorts strutting his stuff for all to admire.
My advice to any you struggling with these like feelings of stifled want......is the only one that is holding you back is yourself. You will only have you to blame for any undo procrastination. Stay focused on what you really want the gym to be...a haven of self care and building health. In the end, anyone with the same dedication would have no choice to not befriend you and dare I say strike a love connection (for those of you looking for that.) We're all there for the same reason, need we not forget! So,check your fears at the door and lift on my friends-lift on!
